Remove a review

How to Remove a Google Review in 2026: Every Method That Actually Works

SHORT ANSWER

You can't delete a Google review yourself, but you can get it removed when it breaks Google's content policies or the law. The fastest route is reporting it through Google's Reviews Management Tool; if that fails you get one appeal, and for defamatory content there's a separate legal removal request.

The short version

  1. Check whether the review actually violates a Google policy (fake, off-topic, conflict of interest, harassment, personal information and so on).
  2. Report it from your Business Profile or through the Reviews Management Tool and pick the matching violation.
  3. Wait for the decision (usually a few days) and check the status in the tool.
  4. If Google says “no violation”, file the one-time appeal with evidence.
  5. If the content is defamatory or illegal, file a legal removal request – a different process with different rules.

Method 1: Report the review through your Business Profile

Open your Business Profile on Google Search or Maps, go to Reviews, click the three dots next to the review and choose “Report review”. Pick the violation that fits best. This is the fastest route and works for most clear-cut cases like spam or off-topic rants.

Method 2: The Reviews Management Tool

Google's Reviews Management Tool replaced the old support form. It lets you report several reviews, see the status of each report (“Decision pending”, “No policy violation”, “Removed”) and file an appeal. Use it for anything you want to track – which should be everything.

If the status stays on “Decision pending”, that's normal for a few days. What to do when it's stuck or rejected is covered in our guide to the Google review appeal.

Method 3: The one-time appeal

When Google decides a reported review doesn't violate policy, you can appeal once per review. The appeal is where most owners lose: they repeat the original report instead of adding evidence. Point to the exact policy, show why the reviewer can't be a real customer, and keep it factual.

Method 4: Legal removal for defamation or illegal content

If a review makes false statements of fact that damage your business, or contains illegal content, you can file a legal removal request with Google. It's a separate process from policy reporting, and the rules depend on where you are – see defamatory Google reviews: legal removal in the US, UK and EU.

Which reviews qualify?

Google removes reviews that break its policies – not reviews that are merely negative or unfair. The most common grounds:

What doesn't work

  • Flagging the same review over and over from multiple accounts – it doesn't speed anything up and can look like manipulation.
  • Paying anyone who promises “guaranteed” removal of genuine reviews – see the red flags of removal services.
  • Paying someone who threatens more 1-star reviews – that's review extortion, and Google has a separate report path for it.
  • Deleting your profile to start fresh – reviews are tied to the place, not to you.

Can you just delete it as the owner?

No. Owners can reply to reviews and report them, but not delete them. The full explanation is in can a business owner delete Google reviews.

FAQ

How long does Google take to remove a review?

Clear violations are often decided within a few days. Appeals and legal requests take longer – anywhere from one to several weeks.

Can I see why Google rejected my report?

Only in broad terms. The Reviews Management Tool shows the status, not a detailed reason. That's why the appeal needs your own evidence.

Will the reviewer know I reported them?

No. Google doesn't notify reviewers who reported them.

Does replying to a review hurt my chances of removal?

No. A calm, factual reply helps customers who read it and doesn't affect Google's decision.
