Defamatory Google Reviews: Legal Removal in the US, UK and EU
A review is defamatory when it states false facts that damage your reputation – “they steal from customers” – not when it shares a harsh opinion. Google has a legal removal request for this, separate from policy reports. What you need to show depends on whether you're in the US, the UK or the EU.
Opinion vs. false statement of fact
| Probably opinion | Possibly defamatory |
|---|---|
| “Worst pizza I've ever had” | “They use expired meat” |
| “Rude and overpriced” | “The owner is a criminal” |
| “Wouldn't recommend” | “They were shut down for health violations” (when untrue) |
United States
Section 230 protects Google from liability for what users post, so Google isn't obliged to remove defamatory reviews on request. In practice, a court order finding the content defamatory is the strongest route. Google still reviews legal removal requests and may act on clear cases.

Under the Defamation Act 2013, a statement has to cause, or be likely to cause, serious harm – for businesses, serious financial loss. Google can be put on notice through its legal removal request; a solicitor's letter adds weight.
European Union
The Digital Services Act requires platforms to act on notices of illegal content, and defamation is illegal under national law. Submit a legal removal request explaining which statements are false and why. Personal data in reviews can additionally be challenged under the GDPR.
Try the policy route first
Many defamatory reviews also break Google's policies – harassment, fake engagement or conflict of interest. That route is faster and cheaper. Check the list of violations and use the appeal before going legal.
FAQ
Do I need a lawyer?
Not to file Google's legal removal request. For a court order – which is often needed in the US – yes.
Can I sue the reviewer?
Yes, if you can identify them and the statement is defamatory. It's expensive and slow, so it's usually the last resort.
